For immediate release
Durban, 9 October 2026 – The National Community Radio Forum – KwaZulu-Natal (NCRF-KZN) has elected a new Board of Directors at its Annual General Meeting (AGM), held on 7 October 2026 at Sica’s Guest House in Mayville, Durban.
Thirteen of the forum’s 22 registered community radio stations attended the AGM, together with one new member station. Members elected the following Board:
| Position | Name | Station |
|---|---|---|
| Chairperson | Mr Simphiwe Makhamba | Itheku FM |
| Deputy Chairperson | Mr Ephraim Dladla | Inkandla FM |
| Treasurer | Ms Nothando Sibiya | Umgungundlovu FM |
| Secretary | Ms Marcia Evans | Newcastle Community Radio |
NCRF-KZN is registered with the Companies and Intellectual Property Commission (CIPC) as a non-profit company, and the elected Board members are recorded as its Directors on the CIPC Certificate (COR 39).
“Our members have given this Board a clear mandate. We are committed to good governance and to strengthening community radio across KwaZulu-Natal, so that our stations can continue to serve the communities that rely on them,” said Mr Simphiwe Makhamba, Chairperson of NCRF-KZN.
Unauthorised meeting
NCRF-KZN has noted that a group of six members convened a separate meeting presented as an NCRF-KZN AGM. That meeting was not called in accordance with the forum’s governance procedures. The members who called it are neither Directors nor members of the Executive Committee (EXCO) and had no authority to convene an AGM on the forum’s behalf.
NCRF-KZN therefore wishes to inform its members, partners, funders, government stakeholders and the public that:
- the AGM held on 7 October 2026 at Sica’s Guest House is the only valid NCRF-KZN AGM;
- NCRF-KZN does not endorse, support or participate in the unauthorised meeting; and
- NCRF-KZN will not be bound by any discussion, resolution or action arising from that meeting.
Stakeholders are asked to engage with NCRF-KZN only through its duly elected Board.
Disciplinary process
The AGM mandated EXCO to institute disciplinary proceedings against the members involved. Six members have been suspended pending the outcome of a disciplinary hearing, which will be conducted in line with the forum’s governance procedures. NCRF-KZN will not comment further on the matter while the process is under way.
