Our Identity

Who We Are

The National Community Radio Forum-KZN (NCRF-KZN) is the provincial body representing 23 ICASA-licensed community radio stations across KwaZulu-Natal. We were established in 2007 as an affiliate of the National Community Radio Forum (NCRF) — South Africa's leading voice for community broadcasting.

We serve as the coordinating hub for member stations that collectively reach over 2 million listeners every day — broadcasting in isiZulu, English, isiXhosa, Afrikaans, Tsonga, Swazi, and German across all nine districts of KwaZulu-Natal.

Our role goes beyond administration. We are a strategic partner to government departments, municipalities, development agencies, and the private sector — connecting organisations to hyperlocal audiences that commercial media cannot reach.

What Drives Us

Our Strategic Objectives

Five pillars that guide our work in community development, advocacy, and empowerment

Community
Development in
Rural Areas

We empower and contribute meaningfully to community development, with a deliberate focus on the rural and disadvantaged areas of KwaZulu-Natal — where community radio is often the only accessible mass communication channel.

Support
Government
Programmes

We provide a trusted, multilingual platform for government departments to inform communities. Current partners include the Office of the Premier KZN, the Department of Education's Matric Support Programme, and eThekwini Municipality.

Community
Development

We empower and contribute meaningfully to community development, with a deliberate focus on the rural and disadvantaged areas of KwaZulu-Natal — where community radio is often the only accessible mass communication channel.

Strengthen
Democracy &
Social Cohesion

Community radio is a pillar of participatory democracy. By facilitating two-way communication between communities and institutions, we improve local accountability, foster social cohesion, and ensure that no community is left voiceless.

Advocate
for Community
Radio Recognition

We lobby government, regulators, and funders for the formal recognition, support, and sustainable financing of community radio. This includes engaging ICASA, MDDA, SENTECH, and the DOC on policy reform and equitable resource allocation.
